Guess what I started to do today? I’m waiting for the wax I ordered to seal the table (I finished sanding it this week so it’s waiting, all ready to be waxed), and I decided to start painting the octagon and dot pattern on the floors. I’m sharing the process in my stories - it’s oddly therapeutic to hand paint all of these squares and I think it’s really going to bring the kitchen together.

I’ve spent most of this week stripping this table in our kitchen. It had a yellow crackle finish from the 90s on it (I remember helping someone paint something with crackle finish when I was a kid. It was a strong trend!), and I just planned to repaint after stripping, but then I saw the beautiful wood grain on the top of the table and knew I couldn’t paint over it. Multiple rounds of stripping and lots of detail work with my new favorite tools (swipe to see them all, and the 3 I used the most) and it is paint free. I even discovered little brass feet under the paint! Next up will be lots of sanding. The table top color is a bit uneven, and the legs aren’t matching the top right now, so I hope gentle sanding can help them all come together. To be continued!

The cane chairs are finished, minus some small touch ups and a few screws I need for the chair seats (there’s always another trip to the hardware store to make). I sealed the leather seat cushions with Leather Max sealer and I’ll be making chair skirts to go over the top that I can throw in the wash when the kids get something on them. I didn’t imagine them with natural cane - I thought I would paint it - but it has grown on me and I think I will leave it natural - it will patina to be a bit darker over time. Now I’m on to the next project, stripping the kitchen table of all its crackly 90s finish. Watch along in stories to see that process!

It’s twilight, I hung these little ashtrays in an odd spot that just felt right, and I had to share because it makes me happy.

I’m attaching new cane webbing to our kitchen chairs today. This is number 3 out of 4 and it went three times as fast as the first one. The hardest part of this project was definitely taking out the old spline, webbing and glue - once you get the hang of it, attaching the new cane is the fun part. I’ll share the process for the fourth one in stories and a short video. (The chair color is Sherwin Williams Colonnade Gray.)
