derrington mirror

I saw this photo on the Anthropologie Instagram account this week and I was instantly drawn to the copper colored mirror over the bed. It reflects light just as a mirror would, but has so much more personality, making this room look about 50 times more glamorous and original than it would if that was just a run of the mill round mirror. I also love that it has no frame – it looks so modern! It is called the Derrington Mirror and it comes in copper and bronze (a gold tone).

You guys, this might seem like just another cleaner (to those who don’t KNOW), but this stuff is the BEST. Not only do I use it to routinely clean any wood furniture or wood floors, I also give run down furniture a light refresh with Murphy’s Oil Soap and fine steel wool, and use it to get tough, worn-in stains out of clothing. Mix it with a little water and it is a great all-purpose cleaner for the kitchen and bathroom. It says on the website that it can also be used as a leather conditioner or an insect repellent (!).

perfect moms

I’ve had a few really busy days this week, where I’ve had to keep pushing off the kids’ requests for me to play with them or read to them. That makes me feel SO guilty, especially when it’s all day long, and of course when they feel they aren’t getting attention they get even more clingy and I get less patient with them and it’s just a vicious cycle. Those days leave me feeling terrible — I’m sure every mom knows that feeling! I saw this post from Scary Mommy on a day just like that, and I felt silly because it’s such an obvious and simple statement, but it made me feel SO much better that day. So, just to remind anyone who is feeling bad today — you’re not perfect, and that’s okay! The fact that you worry so much about it means you’re probably doing an amazing job.

I am always looking for quick yet interesting ways to cook the ingredients we usually have stocked in the fridge. One of those is mushrooms, which I love sauteed in olive oil with salt and pepper to eat over meat or with quinoa, or stuffed with anything, or added to a soup or stew. I tried this recipe for Creamy Garlic Parmesan Mushrooms┬áthis week, and it was really easy and used ingredients I had on hand (I always substitute whole milk for heavy cream, and I did pick up the cream cheese just for this recipe, but other than that it was all staples). Not only was it DELICIOUS (I seriously can’t wait to make these again — not the healthiest side dish but wow, so good), but I loved that it made the mushrooms the star. They were a standalone side dish that wasn’t a garnish or a vehicle for anything else.

Can you tell it’s cream sauce season in the Northeast? The temperature goes down and the calories go up, I guess! I did substitute whole milk for the heavy cream again in this One Pan Mediterranean Chicken with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce recipe, but that didn’t make it any less delicious. It was so good over plain couscous (my one-year-old couldn’t get enough of it), and just like the mushroom recipe, it was quick and easy and didn’t use a lot of ingredients. I always have a jar of roasted red peppers on hand, so I will definitely be making this often!
